Paragraph one of: The portrait and the hero
The rise of the artist as hero accelerated following the end of the age of revolution and the collapse of the old monarchies. Until then, access to visual material had been limited to commonplace items such as coins or church imagery (Mirzoeff 39). However, an influx of new technologies such as lithographs and photograph prompted a revolution of the visible (Mirzoeff 39). This exposure to new forms and mediums of visual texts allowed for growth of artistic expression and the artist as hero (Mirzoeff 40).
